Modder gave the NPCs in Skyrim VR access to ChatGPT so that they can generate responses and actually have a conversation instead of the prebaked responses.
Developers thought adding VR to Skyrim will provide a truly immersive experience. Wrong. What will VR do when the NPCs act dumb and can’t even hold proper conversations? After some time, it actually gets boring in an RPG as you know the responses that the NPCs will give you.
So, this Modder saw this problem and decided to create a mod where the NPCs would have access to ChatGPT and Google Text-to-Speech. Doing so will enable the player to ask the NPCs questions using their microphone and the NPC will generate an answer with the help of AI ChatGPT.
Conversations With The NPC
Reading the headline some people will surely wonder, what conversations could you actually have with an NPC. Well for people who haven’t played Skyrim, you have a set of questions that you can ask from the NPC. For instance, from this shop owner NPC, you can ask about the item you are going to purchase or a pre-set question regarding something random. The answers are only 3/4 responses which the NPC keeps repeating.
Now, the player, can’t ask any other questions nor can the NPC give any other answers. But thanks to this ChatGPT mod, the players will now be able to ask different questions, like “When does the shop close?” or, “What item am I holding?” and that too by speaking. Then the NPC will provide you with a custom-generated spoken response with lip-syncing.
This will make the NPCs more natural and more useful as they can provide you with actual information that can help you in the game. He showcased even more scenarios in a YouTube video.
Moreover, what is more, interesting is that this Mod also enables the NPCs to remember past events and conversations so you can basically pick up where you left off your last conversation. Everything is in the beta testing phase though so you can expect the Mod will get better with time.
How To Try This Mod
For now, you can’t try the mod. But Art From The Machine (The person working on the Mod) says that it will be available soon for public testing.
